12 Items

The Victory Medal awarded to David Barr was discovered in a cupboard at New Bottle Primary Adcademy, near Sunderland. With the help of the British Legion the childen found all his military records. They wished to return the item to his family and managed to trace his great-great nephew. David Barr had originally joined the army in 1902 at the age of 19, and was sent to India, where he was taught to ride horses. He then left the army in 1908, and as a reservist was one of the first people to be called up 5th August 1914. He was sent to France on 19th September, reported missing 20 October 1914, confirmed as POW on 25th November 1914, and interred in Holland until the end of the war. || 12 different views of Victory Medal no 1711 awarded to David Barr of Durham Light Infantry. || || David Barr (Victory medal) || David Barr - Victory medal || Medal || Victory medal as seen from different angles with the inscription on one side The Great War for Civilization 1914-1919, and David Barr's name, number etc on the edge.

My father's MC in Highland Light Infantry

1 Item

Golden Treasury Book - see flyleaf and back page in book listing his service. Had this rebound book with him throughout the war. || This story is about my father Hugh Paterson Haddow OBE MC who was a captain in the 17th Highland Light Infantry. Hugh was born in 1897 and enlisted in the HLI on September 12, 1914, and subsequently on November 22, 1915. The gap was possibly due to him getting a commission as an army officer and returning to the front line after retraining. His brother, who also served in the HLI, joined at the same time. Inside the front cover of Hugh's Golden Treasury Book it says Corp HP Haddow No. 15854 A-Coy 17th HLI (Highland Light Infantry) BEF (British Expeditionary Force). On the back cover it says: A.Coy 17th HLI Somme January 1916.
