This medal was instituted in 1883, a year after Serbia became a Kingdom and was originally given for meritorious military service during peace time. However, the legislation regarding this award was changed at a later point so that it could also be awarded during war. One side of the medal has the Serbian Cyrillic text 'ЗА ВОЈНИЧКЕ ВРЛИНЕ', which transliterates to 'Za Vojnicke Vrline', and translates to 'For Military Virtues', with a wreath surrounding the text. The other side of the medal has a national, heraldic Serbian eagle motif. The medal was also awarded during the First World War and was manufactured in France and Switzerland after the outbreak of the war. Serbian Medal for Zealous Service in full size and miniature, plus an award certificate for this medal. || Established in 1913, following the Second Balkan War, this medal was awarded to enlisted men, NCO's, and officers, and civilians for zealous service either from within or for the Serbian Army. It continued to be awarded throughout the First World War and was manufactured at the time in France and Switzerland. The gold versions of this medal was, from late 1914, awarded to officers and the silver version to officers of non-combat units. One side of the medal has the Serbian national, heraldic eagle. The other side has the Serbian Cyrillic text 'ЗА РЕВНОСНУ СЛУЖБУ', which transliterates to 'Za Revnosnu Sluzbu', and translates to 'For Zealous Service'. This medal sometimes appears in medal sets of the time of those who also served in the Balkans as part of the non-Serbian, Allied forces. Sometimes, it could take years after the end of the war for recipients to receive their awards.
