Oriental Table Runner
10 Items
My grandfather Albert Jenkins served initially in the Welsh Regiment and always claimed that he served at Ypres. At some point he was detached from this regiment, joining another and going with them to the Dardanelles and Egypt. There he was reported missing, presumed killed; and it was not until this table runner turned up later that there was proof he was still alive. He served during the rest of the war and returned in 1919. He told his family that the lady selling the runner said she would send it home; however he took it off her and did it himself, suspecting she said that to everyone. This is an embroidered velvet table runner, showing military and oriental scenes, Egypt and Dardanelles 1915, with a union flag central cartouche, camels, pyramids, etc. || Embroidered velvet table runner, showing military and oriental scenes, Egypt and Dardanelles 1915. Painted silk souvenir table centre cloth
1 Item
Painted silk - picture of Lille possibly town Hall on fire - trimmed with lace. This silk piece has been kept by my grandmother and my mother as a souvenir of grandfather's time in the war. Fire in a building due to shelling seems a strange thing to record on a souvenir however I understand it was fairly common.
