A British soldier's family photographed to mark a christening

It is evident from the baby’s long, white gown that this family of four visited a photographic studio in order to commemorate the youngest member’s christening. His or her older brother stands alongside their mother, and in front of their soldier–father. Although the details of the photographic studio are not given anywhere on the postcard, a name and address have been written in black ink on the reverse: ‘Pte Private W George No 20429 / Leigh Road / Chantry / Nr Frome / Somerset / England’. Perhaps he is the soldier–father pictured on the front.

A British soldier's family marks a christening

1 Item

There are no handwritten or printed details on this real photographic postcard to tell us who the family of six pictured are, or who photographed them in a garden setting in an unspecified location. The occasion is clear from the baby’s long white gown, however: its christening. The baby’s siblings and mother are also dressed in festive white clothes for the occasion. Their soldier–father’s uniform, by contrast, looks rather creased. The single chevron on his sleeves indicates that he is a lance corporal. The details of his shoulder titles are indistinct. || A real photographic postcard || || Photograph || A photograph of a British soldier and his family marking a christening

A British soldier's family photographed in a garden

1 Item

A real photographic postcard. || We do not know the names of the boy and girl who posed for this photograph with their parents in a garden. Thanks to his bandolier and cap badge, however, we do know that their soldier–father – who has put his arm affectionately around their mother’s shoulders – was serving in a Royal Artillery unit when the photograph was taken. || || Photograph || A British soldier's family of four photographed in a garden

A British soldier's family photographed in Exeter.

1 Item

A photograph of a British soldier's family of four. || The printed information on the back of this postcard tells us that the photographic studio that produced the portrait of the family pictured on the front was ‘Alan Mills, Paris St., Exeter in Devon’. There are no further clues to help us to identify the two girls and their parents, nor does the soldier–father’s uniform bear any distinguishing badges. One detail is noticeable, however: both of the girls appear to be wearing heart-shaped pendants.
