Little Percy's 'prayer for Daddy'.
‘AE’ are the initials of the artist who created the poignant scene on the front of this postcard. They can be seen to the right of the text, which reads, ‘A Prayer for Daddy / Daddy darling, night and morn / I pray for you where’er you be – / May God keep you safe from harm / And bring you soon back home to me.’. Portrayed above is a boy kneeling by his bed, hands clasped in prayer. Within the bubble of imagination above his head is a British soldier shouldering his rifle against the backdrop of a military encampment. The printed information on the reverse states that the postcard was ‘Printed in Great Britain’, plus ‘C P. C.. Series 405.’. A pencilled message has also been handwritten on the back: ‘To my Dear little Percy I am sending you this little card for you to learn when I come home & see you again. which I hope it will not be long now. With love from your Daddy. Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx’.

‘A Prayer for my dear Daddy’ is the title of the poem printed above the kneeling child pictured on this postcard. It reads, ‘Daddy darling I am thinking, / Of dear Father far away, / And that you are free from danger, / Night and Morn for you I pray. / Though from all of us you’re parted, / Still I pray where ’er you be, / That God will keep you from all danger, / And bring you safely back to me.’ The only potentially identifying information regarding its publisher printed on the back of this postcard is, ‘(117) Entirely British Manufacture’. || A British postcard. || || Postcard || A British postcard.

A British sentimental postcard || Displayed on the front of this postcard is a hand-tinted photograph of a girl kneeling by her bed, apparently deep in prayer. ‘Prayer for my Dear Dad’ is printed above, while the verse below reads, ‘See, I kneel before Thy presence, – hear / O Father, when I pray / Thou wilt guard and bless my Daddy – fighting for us, far away ; / And I’d ask a special blessing – may he feel, ’mid war’s alarms, / That beneath him, and upholding, are Thine “everlasting arms.”’ ‘Bamforth (copyright)’ and ‘Madeleine St Clair.’ are printed in the bottom left- and right-hand corners respectively. The printed information on the reverse states, ‘Bamforth & Co. Ltd., Publishers Holmfirth (England) and New York. / “Patriot” Series. No. 1071. A small boy has been depicted solemnly standing to attention on the front of this postcard against a bright-red background. He wears a tropical topi, or pith helmet, and holds an unsheathed sword in one hand and a Union flag in the other. The caption beneath him reads, ‘WAITING FOR DADDY. / I MUST TAKE CARE OF MUMMY NOW!’. The artist’s name – Lawson Wood – can be seen level with the boy’s knees, on the left; ‘No. 2’ has been printed in the bottom right-hand corner. The printed information on the reverse tells us that it is part of the ‘“ST CLAIR” WAR SERIES’, ‘Printed in Great Britain’, and ‘Printed and Published by DOBSON, MOLLE & CO. LTD., Edinburgh and London’. Postally used, the postmark indicates that it was mailed in September 1915. The name and address of the recipient have been handwritten in violet ink: ‘Miss Sanger, / c/o Mrs Thos. Ellis, / Summer Hill, / Warbleton. Sussex.’. The message reads, ‘My dear Ena, / Many thanks for your postcard. Glad you are enjoying yourself & having nice weather. I don’t suppose you will want to come home will you. How do you like the little kitten. I expect you like being in the hayfield. Give my love to all & kiss the babies for me. With love & kisses from Ella.’. || A sentimental/patriotic British postcard || || Postcard || A British postcard entitled 'Waiting for Daddy.'.
