The War Memorials at Churchill and Sarsden
Excerpt from Churchill memorial album;
photographs of Churchill war memorial;
pdf of the collected images
During the war, the church in Churchill asked parishioners to put up photographs of the men who were going to serve, so that people could pray for them. These photographs were then put into an album by Mr. W.H. Anson, the local schoolmaster. The album belongs to the parish church and is kept in the county record office. It includes the names of the men and details of their regiments.
I started to make an album of my own, from the war memorial and The History of Churchill by Mrs. L. Rose. Sometimes the same name appears on two different village memorials.

Cracker Jack and the War
1 Item
I found this advertisement in an American newspaper from 1918. Cracker Jack is a popular caramel-coated popcorn snack, later to be associated with the sport of baseball in the minds of Americans. In 1918, Cracker Jack urged Americans to join the US Navy (their mascot was a boy in a sailor suit). Also, by eating the product, consumers could save valuable sugar and wheat for the war effort. The USA had just entered the war in 1917, so the patriotic fever was still strong with the American public.
