St Peter's Church Memorial Book | Norton on Derwent
There are twenty four pages recording the names of one hundred and eighteen men from Norton. There are two further images of the covers of the book. The pages are thought to be parchment.
Norton on Derwent is a small town of some six thousand people on the south bank of the river Derwent, North Yorkshire. In 1914 it was an urban district in the East Riding of Yorkshire. On the north bank of the river is the twin market town of Malton. After the armistice in 1918 a number of war memorials were proposed and at least six memorials to the fallen exist in the two towns.
In the case of Norton it was decided that the memorial would be in the form of an an illuminated manuscript book listing the names of the men and women of the town who had died in the conflict. The book was to be kept in the church of St Peter on Langton Road and was completed in 1922. The book is held in the memorial chapel which includes a 1914-18 War Memorial Tablet installed by public subscription and unveiled in 1934. St Peter's West Window was also installed and dedicated in 1921 in the memory of those named in the memorial book. If anyone wishes to visit the church they can do by prior arrangement.
The Reverend Rachel Hirst and the the Church council agreed to allow the book to be transported to the British Library, Boston Spa by the Rotary Club of Malton and Norton (http://bit.ly/1Ge0Prb)where it was then digitalised and returned.
