A British soldier and his family photographed in Ilkley
A real photographic postcard
Although we do not know the identities of the family pictured on the front of this real photographic postcard, the text in the bottom right-hand corner tells us that they were photographed in Bontoft’s studio in Ilkley (then in the West Riding of Yorkshire). The British army sergeant is pictured looking down at the baby that his wife is holding; his visible shoulder title is illegible. His wife is wearing an ornate hat and a fur scarf, the baby’s long white gown suggests that the photograph commemorates his or her christening.
