'Holy Father | in thy mercy.'
A British sentimental postcard.
Two rather grim scenes comprise the pictorial element of this postcard. The first, in the top right-hand corner, shows two British soldiers firing their rifles from a dugout. Beneath this vignette is pictured a living room, with a distracted-looking mother sitting bolt upright in an armchair, her three daughters kneeling in prayer around her. The verse below, headed ‘HOLY FATHER, IN THY MERCY (1).’, reads, ‘Holy Father, in Thy mercy, / Hear our anxious prayer, / Keep our loved ones, now far absent, / ’Neath Thy care.’. ‘BAMFORTH (COPYRIGHT).’ has been printed in the bottom left-hand corner. The text on the reverse states, ‘BAMFORTH & CO., LTD., PUBLISHERS HOLMFIRTH (ENGLAND) AND NEW YORK. SERIES NO. 4841/1 / PRINTED IN ENGLAND.’

Entitled ‘An Angel of Mercy.’, the staged, tinted scene on the front of this postcard portrays a boy dressed as a British officer lying on a makeshift stretcher (which actually appears to be a deckchair) on the grass, looking up at a girl dressed as a nurse, who is leaning over him with a glass of water in her hand. On the back is the printed circular logo – a ship at sea – of ‘Silk & Terry Birmingham’, while within the stamp box is the legend ‘Entirely British Production’. || A British patriotic postcard || || A British patriotic postcard || Postcard

This is a souvenir book of pressed flowers that was sent to his parents back in London in 1918. The book was given to my husband by his mother about ten years ago. It is of little value as an individual item to us and we would like to contribute it to the broader picture of artefacts from the first world war.
