'Won't you take me with you? / Ne voulez-vous pas m’emmener avec vous?'
A British sentimental postcard
A A Nash created the scene on the front of this postcard (his name can be seen to the right), portraying a girl sitting on a carpet next to a suitcase. She is wearing a soldier’s cap and is holding a rifle; around her are strewn items of military equipment, as well as an open box of cigarettes. The caption is printed in both French and English: ‘Ne voulez-vous pas m’emmener avec vous? / WON’T YOU TAKE ME WITH YOU?’. The printed details on the reverse state, ‘Inter-Art Co., Red Lion Square, London, W.C. / “ELEVEN-O-FOUR” Series. No. 1105. / British Manufacture Throughout.’. The message on the reverse has been headed ‘On active Service’, and the same hand, in black ink, has addressed the postcard to ‘Miss Muriel Whitehouse / 125 Monks Rd / Lincoln / England’. Another hand has crossed out the address and has written instead ‘Sunningdale / Woodford Rd / Leytonstone / London.’. The message alongside reads, ‘Wednesday 22nd Aug / Dear Muriel / Mother sent me your letter, for which I was so pleased. I will send you the moths ? when you get back to Leytonstone. Tell mother I have sent her letter to Sunningdale. Love & kisses from Daddy / xxxxxxxx’. The postcard has been franked three times: ‘LINCOLN SEP 3 930 AM 1917’; ‘PASSED HELD CENSOR 2581’; and ‘FIELD POST OFFICE C. 4 ? / A ? AU 17’.
