'Always in our thoughts.'
The head-and-shoulders portrait of a British soldier has been inserted in the top left-hand corner of this postcard, apparently looking up at the verse that appears in the top right-hand corner. Headed ‘Always in our thoughts’, it reads: ‘Though to-day we’re parted, / We think of you always, / And for you’re sic quick and safe return, / Your loved ones ever pray.’. The posed scene below comprises a small girl seated on a table, next to a photograph of a British soldier, her arms slung around her mother’s neck as they apparently read a letter. The printed information on the reverse states, ‘All British Production / Series No 496.1’. Postally used, the postmark tells us that it was sent from Chester on 28 September 1915, while the message, written in black ink, informs us that it was written by Ada Cooper, the ‘sincere friend’ of the addressee, whose name and address are given as ‘Mrs V. Lockley / 251 Bergholt Road / Colchester Essex’.

A British sentimental postcard sent to a British soldier in France. || Two photographic scenes have been superimposed on a delicately ornamented background on the front of this postcard. At the top, a mother and her daughter are depicted gazing at framed photograph; below is a British soldier with a pipe in one hand and an envelope in the other. The verses on either side of the soldier’s photograph read, ‘Only a simple card, yet this message it truly takes, / That the best of health and luck be yours, whilst fighting for our sakes. / Remember though across the sea you’re now so far away / Constantly in our minds we have you day by day.’. The printed information on the reverse states, ‘H. G. Glen & Co., Ltd., Leeds.’ and ‘115’. The postmark tells us that the postcard was franked on 27 April 1916 in Sunderland (in County Durham). It is addressed in black ink to ‘L. cpl. Dixon 8042 / R. A. M. C. Royal Army Medical Corps / No 1 General Hospital / Etretat , / France / B. E. F. British Expeditionary Force’. The message reads, ‘27th – 4 – 16 / My dear Joe xx / Just a card to let you know I have received other 2 ppcs picture postcards? but still no letters. I am pleased to hear you are keeping fine & the weather too, it is lovely here to-day. Best of Love From your Ever Loving Wife xxxx Mary x / Best of love from Father Mother Deb & all Family xxx’.
