A boy is depicted on the front of this postcard, hands in his pockets as he gazes at a framed photograph of a British soldier hanging on the wall. Entitled ‘I Loves my Dad’, the verse below reads, ‘Dat’s my Daddy’s picture, an’ I’m feeling awful proud, / ’Cos my Dad’s a soldier, where the guns are firing loud ; / Guess he’s awful brave an’ fine, an’ fights the whole long day, / So’s to keep us safe an’ sound, an’ drive all harm away.’. ‘Madeleine St Clair’, the name of the verse’s composer, appears at the bottom. The typeset information on the reverse includes ‘Bamforth & Co., Ltd., Publishers Holmfirth (England) and New York. / “Patriot” Series. No. 1081. Printed in England.’. The postcard has been addressed in black ink to ‘Pte J W Damms / 16611 / D Company / 3rd Linc Regt/ Harold St School / Grimsby’. The message reads, ‘To Dear Daddy with love from Leslie who misses you very much and wishes you was at home so good bye from your little son’. The postcard is franked ‘Bos no doubt the remainder would say ‘Boston’, in Lincolnshire 11.30AM 19 OC 17’.

A horseshoe surrounded by pink roses and adorned with the legend ‘With love and fond wishes’ is the central motif of this postcard. Headed ‘Birthday greetings to Dad’, the verse below reads, ‘A very Happy Birthday morn / Dear Father, may this be, / So full of Loving Greetings True / And Fondest thoughts for thee; / Mayst thou be spared for many years / Surrounded by our love, / With days of Happiness and Peace / And Blessings from Above’.
