A British Royal Fusilier and his family
This photograph of a British soldier and his family has not aged well, but certain details are nevertheless clear, such as the soldier’s cap badge (which seems to be slightly askew), which is that of the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). His wife wears gloves and a plumed hat. Their three sons have been positioned to the side; the younger two boys seem to be wearing a type of uniform. The seated boy has crossed eyes. The details on the reverse tell us that the photograph was produced by ‘Gale’s Studios Ltd / Branches Everywhere’.

The logo on the back of this real photographic postcard tells us that it was produced by ‘Van Ralty’, with studios in ‘Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, Nottingham, Oldham, Bolton, &c. &c.’. The family portrait on the front comprises a girl, her mother and her soldier–father. His clearly visible cap badge and ‘RE’ shoulder title tell us that he has enlisted in the Royal Engineers, and probably relatively recently, given the apparently pristine appearance of his uniform. || A real photographic postcard || || A photograph of a British soldier serving in the Royal Engineers and his family || Photograph
