'With best love'.

1 Item

The main photograph on the front of this postcard shows a small boy, apparently lost in thought while composing a letter. ‘With best love’ has been printed below the stool on which he is kneeling. Beneath a head-and-shoulders portrait of a British solder that has been inset to the right are the following lines: ‘Had I an aeroplane Father dear / I think I’d fly to thee. / For I am longing dearest / Thy loving face to see. / But as I cannot come that / way, I’ll write my message / true. Ten hundred thousand loving thoughts. From your / little boy to you.’ The only printed information of note on the reverse is the number ‘81’. There is, however, an address and message written in black ink, ‘To Miss Lizzie Whiteside / 112 Parson ? St. / Townhead / Glasgow.’. The message reads, ‘Dear Lizzie / Hope you are eng ? good health as it leaves us all well at home. Hoping to hear from you soon. Best love, From Cousin Eva ?’. The postmark is only partially legible, and indicates that the postcard was posted to Scotland from Belfast, in Northern Ireland, in May. || A British sentimental postcard. || || A British sentimental postcard entitled 'With best love'. || Postcard

The ink of the postmarks stamped on the back of this postcard have leached through to the front (they say ‘PLYMOUTH / 7 – / 12 FEB 18’ and ‘BUY NATIONAL WAR BONDS’). The initials of the artist who drew the illustration (‘C.T.N.’) headed ‘With Love from Daddy.’ can be seen beneath the British soldier who is portrayed embracing his small daughter. The postcard has been addressed in black ink to ‘Miss Elsie Butler / 21 Victoria St / Reading’, and the message reads, ‘Dear Elsie Butler / Thank you for your PC. I have sent a box of 6 for mother tell her to give you two each no more this time from your ever loving father ? H Butler’.
