'Deeds Not Words!'
‘Fredk Spurgin’, the name of the artist who created the red-white-and-blue-framed scene on the front of this postcard, can be seen to the right of the rifle butt. The rifle is propped up against an armchair on which a girl and a boy, the latter dressed as a British soldier, are embracing. The hilt of a drawn sword rests on the arm of the chair opposite them, with its scabbard lying on the seat. The caption says: ‘WE DON’T WANT WORDS, WE WANT DEEDS.’, beneath which someone has written ‘Haw-Haw!’ in black ink.
The printed information on the reverse states, ‘Inter-Art Co., Red Lion Square, London, W. C. / “STEADFAST” Series. No. 938. British Manufacture.’. The postmark tells us that it was posted in St Andrews on 1 Ju June? 1915. There is a message written in black ink, in the same handwriting as the ‘Haw-Haw!’, addressed to ‘Miss G. Summerhayes / Wycombe Abbey / High Wycombe / Bucks’. It reads, ‘Thanks for your letter. Will answer when I have time – but am most awfully busy at present, what with Degree Exams & Essays & Tennis & Golf. So glad & jealous (!!!) about your drawing. I. K. S.’
