Leonard Smith KIA 1918
My Great Great Uncle Leonard Mark Smith was born on 12th July 1895 in Chelmsford, Essex. Son to Arthur Smith and Mary Smith. At the outbreak of war in 1914 he went to his local recruiting office at Warley, Essex and volunteered for the army. Aged 19 he was enlisted with the Essex Regiment 2nd Battalion, based at Warley, Essex. After training, Private 10353 Smith landed in France on 24th March 1915. In March 1918 Leonard found himself at the front line at Arras. The Germans had started a huge counter attack on our forces on the 21st of March and soon made a hole in the allied defences when they over ran the Portuguese forces, this was a dangerous gap in the line and the Essex regiment were charged with filling the gap and holding the line, they valiantly plugged the gap and held off the Germans but were reduced to 80 men, amongst the fatalities was Leonard Smith, killed in action on the 28th March. He has no known grave but is remembered on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais in France and on the Chelmsford memorial. He was entitled to the 1914-1915 Star, British war Medal and Victory Medal.

Léonard Noche est né le dimanche 15 septembre 1878 à Chamberet (19370). Il est le fils de Pierre NOCHE et de Marie VERGONZANNE, A sa naissance, il a plusieurs sœurs : Catherine (née en 1870), Anna (née en 1872). Il se marie avec Marie BUISSON (1903 IL décède le samedi 19 octobre 1957, à l'âge de 79 ans, au Kremlin-Bicêtre (94270). Services militaires : Ajourné en 1899 bon en 1900 Incorporé en novembre 1900, envoyé en congé le 20 septembre 1902 en attendant son passage dans la réserve. Certificat de bonne conduite accordé. Rappelé à l’activité par décret de mobilisation générale du 1er aout 1914. Affecté au 36° régiment d’infanterie, arrivé au corps le 3 aout 1914. Passé au 39°le 8 décembre 1914 ; au 40° le 1er mars 1916 ; au 313° régiment d’infanterie le 29 janvier 1917, au 50 RI le 10 novembre 1917, passé au 109° le 22 novembre 1918. Envoyé en congés illimité le 8 février 1919. Libéré du service militaire le 1 novembre1927. Blessé le 10 janvier 1915 à Crouy, évacué sur l’hôpital Lariboisière le 12 janvier. Reconnu atteint de plaies bras droit deux orifices baïonnette (billet d’hôpital 3293). Le 7 avril 1917 violement projeté à terre par un obus de gros calibre. Se releva seul et quoique fortement contusionne et blessé à la main refusa d’aller au poste de secours pour suivre la compagnie donnant ainsi à ses camardes un bel exemple de courage.
