Dennis Knowles: RNAS Airship Pilot
3 Items
The interview was conducted by Age Exchange in partnership with The University of Essex and The First World War Centre –University of Hertfordshire –as part of the Children of The Great War project. Martin Knowles came to the memory collection day at University of Essex in Colchester and talked about his father Denis Knowles who was an airship commander in the Royal Naval Air Service. He piloted airships in the English channel during the war which were used as a deterrent against German U-boats. After The Battle of Jutland submarines became a favoured means of attack by the Germans. The airships were particularly useful as they hovered above the submarines unlike the airplanes that flew past. It made it easier to drop bombs on the U-Boats. Because the U Boats hated the airships so much it worked most successfully as a deterrent and therefore few bombs were actually dropped. He received the DFC in 1918. Martin brought photographs, articles and log books chronicling his father’s work. Later the RNAS became the RAF. A joint project between Age Exchange, the University of Essex and the Everyday Lives in War FWW Engagement Centre, University of Herts.
