Jerome Guerin

Jerome Guerin was my uncle. Born in Killarney, Ireland, he attended veterinary college in Dublin and was a popular rugby player with Leinster. He enlisted in 1914 with the Second Battalion of the Leinster regiment. What we know of his experiences is largely gleaned from letters home; in August 1916 he wrote to Mary Guerin, his mother, telling her that he hoped the war would be over soon, and concluding A letter out here from home is like nothing on this earth; you can send me on more cigs and chocs and if it could be managed the Cork Weekly Examiner every week. On 20 September, a telegram arrived to say he was dead. He has no known grave.
The collection contains: Photograph at college; Facsimile of card + poem 'Remembrance'; Biographical notes made by his niece; Death penny
