'Serbian Newspaper' from 1917 || This is 28 January 1917 edition of the newspaper ‘Српске Новине’, which transliterates as ‘Srpske Novine’, and which translates as ‘Serbian Newspaper’. Because Serbia was under occupation at the time, these newspapers were published on the island of Corfu, and this edition was in the 84th year of publication. The Corfu editions of the newspaper were published from April 1916 through November 1918. Naturally, in the middle of a war, there is a strong military editorial theme in this newspaper. Interestingly, in the ‘СПИСАК’ section, which transliterates from the original Cyrillic as ‘Spisak’ and translates to ‘List’, where a list of active and reserve officers who have died is given, the fourth name on the list, in Cyrillic, reads ‘актив. пешад. Маjoр Воjислав Ил. Танкосиђ’, which transliterates as ‘activ. pesad. Major Vojislav Il. Tankosic’, and translates as ‘active infantry Major Vojislav Il. Tankosic’. Tankosic was both a Major in the Serbian Army and, simultaneously, a Vojvoda with the Serbian Chetnik guerrillas. He was wounded and died in November 1915 and it took until late January 1917 for the Serbian press to publish his name as having died. The Serbian Army Chancellery published this information just over a week before it went into this edition of the newspaper, although the Austrian press published propaganda photos of a dead Tankosic who they had exhumed from his grave in late 1915. This shows how difficult it must have been to collate and organise certain types of information during war time.
