A prayer card issued by St Mary's Church, Great Parndon, Essex
There are no printed details on the back of this card, which is the same size as a First World War-era postcard. On the front is depicted a heavily laden soldier returning home to his wife and child, who welcome him at the gate of a country cottage. A church steeple looms in the background, behind a vision of Christ, his arms outstretched as though blessing the little family. The name of the artist – Arthur Twidle – can be seen in the bottom left-hand corner. The printed text below reads: ‘Great Parndon. / At our Easter Communion we are praying for you. / May the Risen Christ, Who left His Home for us, have you in His keeping till we meet again. / To … / From … / Home Words ? No. 169’. A name has been written in black ink after ‘To’: ‘Pte H. W. Anker’.
