A British soldier's family of four.

1 Item

The name of the photographic studio that the family of four gazing out at us visited in order to be photographed does not appear on this real photographic postcard. Both children wear sturdy boots. Their soldier–father’s cap badge most closely resembles that of the Border Regiment. || || A photograph of a British soldier's family of four. || Photograph

A British Territorial soldier's family of four.

2 Items

A real photographic postcard. || Two small army children and their parents gaze out seriously from this photographic postcard. There is nothing to indicate which photographer’s studio they visited in order to pose for their picture. The only visible distinguishing feature of their soldier–father’s uniform is the badge pinned above his right-hand breast pocket. This is the Imperial Service badge, indicating that he is a Territorial soldier who had volunteered after 1912 and before 30 September 1914 to serve overseas. There is a message scrawled in black ink on the reverse of this ‘BRITISH MADE’ postcard. It reads: ‘To Annie & Thom ? / Wishing you A sic All a verry sic Happy New Year hope it will Be Happier for us all I have not heard from Allen not since Before xmas Love to all from your affet ? Brother & Sister & ? Drew ?’. Together, the few clues on the front and back of this postcard suggest that it may have been sent in late December 1914.
