A British soldier's family of four photographed in northern England

A photographic postcard of a British soldier's family of four.
Printed on the back of this photographic postcard, beneath a company logo – ‘Van Ralty / Postcard’ – is the following information: ‘STUDIOS – Manchester. Liverpool. Sheffield / Nottingham. Oldham. Bolton. &c. &c.’. The two children who posed with their parents for the picture on the front therefore visited a photographer’s studio in northern England in order to have this family photograph taken. The small girl holds a ball, while her older brother rests his hand on their soldier–father’s right arm. The three stripes on his left arm, and the field-gun badge above them, signifies that their father is a sergeant in the Royal Artillery. (A shoulder title, indicating whether he was serving in the Royal Field Artillery (RFA), Royal Horse Artillery (RHA) or Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA) is not discernable.)

A British soldier's family of four photographed in Hull

1 Item

There are no written clues – be they printed or handwritten – to help us to identify this family of four, but at least the name of the photographer’s studio that produced this photographic postcard is embossed on the front: ‘J. J. Payne, 106 Anlaby Road, Hull’. The details of the soldier–father’s cap badge are difficult to make out, but it may be that of the Royal Artillery, particularly since he is also wearing a bandolier. The children and their mother are warmly dressed in fashions suggesting the later years of the First World War. || A soldier's family of four photographed in Hull. || || A British soldier's family photographed in Hull || Photograph
