Herbert Rowe service in France
My grandfather, Herbert Rowe, was English and met Hannah, my grandmother, when in Cork, Ireland. He joined the army in 1901, enlisting at Hounslow, Middlesex, England. He had two daughters – Madge and Katherine (Katherine is my mother). Madge was born in 1913, but she died at age 10 from whooping cough.
He sent descriptive postcards about his experiences in the war to Madge Rowe of Brown Street, Cork, Ireland in 1915, and also to his wife Hannah. Herbert Rowe served in France as all the cards he sent were from France or written in French. He served for the duration of the war in the Army Service Corp. He was a driver who brought ammunition from depots. After the war he volunteered to go to Russia.
