Thomas Bromley Shaw

109 Items

Private Thomas Bromley Shaw, born about 1885, died about 1960. He was cremated at Lawnswood, Leeds. His parents were in the Salvation Army where his mother was a Major. He joined the armed forces from Leeds, 4th West Yorkshire Regiment, in February 1918. Signed up for the Artillery. Possibly later served in a non-combatant role, possibly building roads and bridges. The Salvation Army tried to get his release from service but this was turned down. He became injured and on 26 July 1918 reclassified to the 103 Labour Company, his number was 609648. In 1919 he is working for the Australian Divisional Artillery. After the War he went back to the Salvation Army but eventually joined the Methodists. He used to be a band master with the Salvation Army. || 1 map; 2 diaries; 1 calendar; 2 programmes of concerts; several letters and other documents. || || Map of the Western Front || Map || On the map is a small X just below Monchy au Bois. Return Front towards the End of the Portico, House of Lords; and Return Front towards Fleet Street

1 Item

This drawing contains elevations by Henry A. Baker for the returns to a terrace of seven five-storey houses on the west side of Westmoreland St, extending from the Portico of the House of Lords to Fleet St. Baker’s final elevation for the Westmoreland St. façade of this terrace was approved by the Wide Streets Commission on 27 February 1800. (See WSC/Maps/195/2). These elevations for the returns to the terrace were executed by Baker in July 1800. The principal designs for the returns are placed side by side on a single sheet of paper. (Fig. a; neg. no. 13). These designs are similar to the final elevation approved for Westmoreland St. especially in the shop windows at ground level. The arched recesses and decorative panels are, however, reminiscent of Baker’s first design for Westmoreland St, which had been rejected in 1799. (See WSC/Maps/194). An alternative design is supplied for each return on overlapping sheets of paper. (Fig. b; neg. no. 1). The alternative for the return facing the House of Lords Portico (on left) supplies a variation on the positioning of decorative mouldings. The alternative elevation for the return facing Fleet St. (on right) is in a pencil sketch, on a slightly larger scale than the principal elevation. In the alternative elevation, the building has been divided into two separate premises. The architect’s note, dated 8 July 1800, indicates his preference for the alternative design. On reverse: “Elevation of the front of Fleet Street”. Scale: 30’ : 6 ½ “ Size: (a) : 18 ¼ “ x 22” - 46 cms x 61 cms (b) : 8” x 10 ¼ “ - 20 ½ cms x 26 ¼ cms (c) : 12” x 17” - 30 ½ cms x 43 ½ cms Paper (3 sheets, no watermark); ink; watercolours

Pinkerton: Antrim to Australia to France

6 Items

My grandmother's cousins, whose father had emigrated to Australia, enlisted almost as soon as war broke out. Alfred Lionel Pinkerton was in the British Special Reserve Artillery as a second lieutenant; he later joined the Royal Flying Corps/ Royal Air Force, and was shot down over Germany. He escaped from prison, got back to England and went back into conflict. He was shot down again, and stayed in a prison camp until the end of the war. On his way back to Australia, he took part in a horse race in Shanghai, was thrown from his horse and was paralysed down one side. He returned to Australia, but died in 1923. His brother Archy Norman Pinkerton joined the Australian Army Service Corps on 20 August 1914, and served in France, and was apparently at Gallipoli. He survived the war, and died in Australia in 1949. It's possible that they visited their father's family near Ballymoney, co. Antrim; certainly the two brothers somehow got a Christmas card printed with the badges of the two units in which they were serving, and sent it to my grandmother's family for Christmas 1916. It has the words France 1916 Germany 1916, possibly indicating Alfred's escape from Germany in October that same year || Photograph of Alfred Lionel Pinkerton in RAF uniform Christmas card and envelope specially printed for the two brothers Alfred and Archy Pinkerton Xerox of genealogical information Offprint of a newspaper with information about Alfred Lionel Pinkerton's fate in Germany || || Gallipoli Front || Aerial Warfare || || Specially printed Christmas cards with badges in gold ink of two units, Australian Service Corps and RAF. || Christmas card || Postcard || Christmas || || Postcard || Address of recipient of Christmas card || Address side of envelope || Front || || Other || Aerial Warfare || Gallipoli Front || Information from official records about army career of Archy Pinkerton || information from official website || || Genealogical information || Other || information from family history and records || Dublin
