Julius Bosonnet | Sergeant Major | Officer Training Corps | Trinity College | 1914-1918
My paternal grandfather, Julius Bosonnet, was a member of the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. His family came to Ireland from Haute-Savoie in France during the late eighteenth century to be educated to work for the Empire. Julius’s father worked in the Department of Education in Ireland during the late 1800s – early 1900s. Julius de-mobbed in 1914 and was re-mobilised at the outbreak of WWI. He was a Sergeant Major in the Officer Training Corps at Trinity College, defending the college during Easter week of 1916. (He was recorded as “Basonnet” in error in the College Records). Julius Bosonnet was associated with Redmond’s Volunteers. However he trained with the IRA after the 1916 executions.

Letters, photos, school magazine and other artefacts many from York and Yorkshire and with a primitive Methodist theme. || I live in what used to be Elmfield College, York (1863-1902), and have in my living room several crates of documents relating to the First World War period. These include letters from the front and many photographs. I hope to upload these over the next few months.

Picture of Julius Leburg in his WWI German uniform. || My Grandfather, Julius Leburg, was born in May of 1876 in Strassbourg, Alsace, France, when it was part of Germany and was called Straßburg, Elsaß-Lothringen, Germany. As early as 1901 he was married and living in Berlin, Germany. His only son was born in Berlin in 1903. In 1910 he had his own business with a partner, selling furniture and antiques. When WWI began he was already in his late 30s but he signed up to defend his country. He was killed on 2 June 1916 at the Battle of Verdun, very close to where he was born. On 25 Jan 1942 the Nazis rounded up his widow and her sister and shipped them off to the Riga Concentration Camp in Latvia. She had refused to leave Berlin because she could not believe that the Germans would harm the widow of a War Hero. || || Germany || My Grandfather, Julius Leburg || Photograph || Picture of my Grandfather, Julius Leburg, in his German WWI uniform.
