Julius Bosonnet | Sergeant Major | Officer Training Corps | Trinity College | 1914-1918

My paternal grandfather, Julius Bosonnet, was a member of the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. His family came to Ireland from Haute-Savoie in France during the late eighteenth century to be educated to work for the Empire. Julius’s father worked in the Department of Education in Ireland during the late 1800s – early 1900s. Julius de-mobbed in 1914 and was re-mobilised at the outbreak of WWI. He was a Sergeant Major in the Officer Training Corps at Trinity College, defending the college during Easter week of 1916. (He was recorded as “Basonnet” in error in the College Records). Julius Bosonnet was associated with Redmond’s Volunteers. However he trained with the IRA after the 1916 executions.

Demetris Georgiou - 9805 Muleteer | Macedonian Mule Corps (1914 – 1918)

1 Item

My grandfather Demetris Georgiou from Louvaras village, Cyprus enlisted as a muleteer in the British Army during the First World War with his brother Yiannis Georgiou. Their father did not want them to go to war, however, they departed from Famagusta sea port and journeyed to Thessaloniki by ship when my grandfather was just 18 years old. When they arrived in Macedonia, they travelled up to the Bulgarian border and reached the Balkan mountains; in Greek: “Pangeon Oros” where they set up camp. My grandfather would often say that he could hear the Jackals (Coyotes) or Chakalia in Greek, howling at night on the Rhodope mountain ranges. The muleteers were unarmed and their job was to look after the mules. The British officers were, however, armed. Demetri and his brother eventually received their first paycheck, which they sent to their father George Georgiou in Cyprus and were later to discover that, as soon as their father received the letter, he kissed it and passed away from his grief at their absence at war. Demetri returned to Cyprus with his brother when the war ended, and married my grandmother, Panagiota Antoniou Papaneophytou, from Pano Platres and they had 5 children. Not long after, British officers in Pano Platres presented Demetri Georgiou with his war medal. His brother Yiannis, remained in Louvaras Village, where he married and had two children and became a priest, Father Papa-Yiannis. Dina V James Limassol, Cyprus || War medal
