'The dream/Le rêve.'

A British patriotic postcard
The faintly inscribed name of the artist who created the scene on the front of this postcard – A A Nash – can just be seen below the red fabric at the foot of the bed. As the caption, ‘The dream.’ and ‘Le rêve.’, in English and in French, makes clear, the small girl who has fallen asleep clutching a toy sword is dreaming of a cavalry charge, with two French tricolour flags flying proudly overhead; what appears to be a British ensign flag seems to have been draped over the bottom of her bed. The printed information on the reverse states: ‘Inter-Art Co., Red Lion Square, London, W.C. / “TWO-NINE-THREE” Series. No. 300. British Manufacture.’. A message has been written in pencil. It reads, ‘My Dear Phil / Just a line hoping you are well I had a letter from Dubby today Daddy is alright. / With love / from Daddy’.

‘To My Dear Ones. / The Soldier’s Dream of Home.’

The black-and-white illustration at the top of this postcard is captioned ‘“Home, Sweet Home.”’ and depicts a boy banging a drum while his mother prepares food at the kitchen table. The verse below, headed ‘To My Dear Ones. / The Soldier’s Dream of Home.’, reads: ‘I dreamed a dream the other night, / And it filled my heart with joy; / The Colonel, bless his dear kind heart, / Said “Take seven days’ leave, my boy.” // Just like a rollicking schoolboy, / Who’d been let out to play; / I danced about the dear old camp, / My thoughts were bright and gay. // I’d got my “Kit” and all things ready, / My “Pass” was all “O.K.;” / And nothing seemed to stop me, / On this, for me, “THE DAY.” // My dream was of home and dear ones, / My thoughts keeping time with the train / And of the jolly times we’d have, / Before “stern duty” called again. // But I awoke to the sound of “Reveille,” / Which quite upset my scheme; / So I send FOND LOVE by this postcard / For I found ’twas “Only a Dream.” “Merry and Bright.” appears in the bottom right-hand corner, and ‘Copyright.’ in the bottom left-hand corner, below ‘From’, after which has been written ‘Bordon in Hampshire’ and ‘July 20 16 1916. A message has been written in black ink on the back of the postcard: ‘To Nellie & Little Nancy / With Love From Yours Will’. || A British sentimental postcard || || Front || A British sentimental postcard || Postcard
