'. . . very expert horsemen . . .'
A British patriotic postcard
The signature of the artist (‘Emlo’?) who drew the scene on the front of this postcard appears below the teddy bear astride the toy horse on the left. Walking ahead is a small boy riding a hobby horse. A portrait of a mounted British soldier hangs on the wall. The caption below reads, ‘We’re very expert horsemen and / as plucky as can be, / We’re breaking in the remounts for / the Army, don’t you see!’. ‘Oilette’ can be seen to the right of the boy’s right foot. Printed details on the reverse include ‘Copyright London / Little Patriots / Raphael Tuck & Sons’ “OILETTE” / Postcard No. 3236 / Art publishers to their Majesties the King & Queen’, as well as ‘By Appointment’ and ‘Printed in the United Kingdom’.
