'With Love from Daddy.'

The ink of the postmarks stamped on the back of this postcard have leached through to the front (they say ‘PLYMOUTH / 7 – / 12 FEB 18’ and ‘BUY NATIONAL WAR BONDS’). The initials of the artist who drew the illustration (‘C.T.N.’) headed ‘With Love from Daddy.’ can be seen beneath the British soldier who is portrayed embracing his small daughter. The postcard has been addressed in black ink to ‘Miss Elsie Butler / 21 Victoria St / Reading’, and the message reads, ‘Dear Elsie Butler / Thank you for your PC. I have sent a box of 6 for mother tell her to give you two each no more this time from your ever loving father ? H Butler’. The typeset details on the back include ‘Copyright Printed and Published by J. Salmon ? England / E. Mack, King Henry’s Rd, Hampstead, London’.

A mother and daughter have been portrayed reading a letter together in the main scene presented by this postcard. Below them is the head-and-shoulders vignette of a pipe-smoking British soldier. The verse to the right is headed ‘Love to Daddy’, and continues: ‘Dear Daddy, we often wish that you were back once more. To take your loved ones in your arms as you used to do before. We know how good and true and brave you are, and so we wait / Trusting to God above, who is both good and great.’. ‘Love to Daddy’ is the title of the poem printed on the front of this postcard. It reads, ‘I am writing to my Daddy, and I’ve got just lots to say, / Tho’ I don’t know how to put it down in quite the proper way; / But I love him, and I miss him, and I’m proud he’s gone to fight, / And I mean to grow up just like him – that’s what I want to write. –’ Part of its ‘“Patriot” Series’, according to the information printed on the reverse, it was printed in England as ‘No. 1064’ by ‘Bamforth & Co., Ltd., Publishers, Holmfirth (England) and New York’.
