'A war baby.'
Depicted on the front of this postcard, which is entitled ‘A WAR BABY.’, are a boy dressed as a clergyman and a girl holding what looks like a cat or a dog in a makeshift christening gown. She appears to be about to dunk the ‘baby’ into a bowl of water balanced on a chair. The caption beneath them reads, ‘I name this child – Jellicoe, Leige, Kitchener Smith’.
The printed information on the reverse includes the words, ‘Copyright. Printed and published by J. Salmon, Sevenoaks, England’, and a number, ‘632’. The postmark tells us that it was posted on 10 July 1915, but the place name is illegible. There is a pencilled message – ‘U or ‘O’ Willie / With love’ – and a name and address: ‘J or ‘I’ Hudson Esq / “Netherlands” or “Wetherlands” / Henconner Lane / Bramley Leeds, in Yorkshire’.

Embossed across the bottom right-hand corner of this photograph of a wide-eyed baby holding a doll are the following details, which identify the photographic studio that produced it: ‘W E Wright & Sons / FOREST GATE & BRANCHES.’. There is a wealth of detail handwritten in black ink on the back, in the form of two names and addresses and a message. The message reads, ‘Many Happy Returns of the Day. From Clem / Love & Kisses xxx xxx’. The postcard is addressed to: ‘Trooper T F Dwyer / No 106068 / A Squadron / Herts Yeomanry / 21st Corps Cavalry Regt / Egyptian Expeditionary Force / Egypt’. In the top left-hand corner are the sender’s details: ‘From Coppen / Lynwood / Whalebone Lane /Beacontree Heath Dagenham / Nr Romford / Essex’. Using these clues, we have managed to identify the baby as being Clemence S Coppen, who was born in late 1916. Baby Douglas and his parents
1 Item
The message written in black ink on the back of this real photographic postcard gives the name and age of the baby pictured with his parents on the front: ‘With Love From us all Sept: 1918. / Baby Douglas / 11 months.’. Baby Douglas is pictured sitting on a cushion, between his parents, with his mother holding him up. His father is wearing an army officer’s Sam Browne belt; the rank badge on his cuff appears to be that of a second lieutenant. The details of his collar badges are not clear enough to be able to identify his regiment or corps. His wedding ring can be clearly seen, however, as can what appears to be an identity bracelet on his right wrist. The stamp of the photographic studio that produced this family portrait can be seen in the bottom right-hand corner: ‘W. E. Wright & Sons / Forest Gate & branches.’. || A real photographic postcard || || Front || A photograph of a British army officer and his family || Photograph
