A photograph of Serbian soldiers being treated for Spanish flu, taken on Wednesday 5 February 1919 in Rotterdam at the auxiliary hospital for Serbs and Portuguese. The auxiliary hospital was located in Schoonderloostraat, the building of the Society of St. Aloysius. In the centre Capt. Dragoljub N. Đurković with a member of the medical staff. Early in the war, an internment camp for German prisoners of war was set up at Queensferry, North Wales; but it closed down on May 21st 1915. In 1918 many German prisoners of war (Prussian Guards) were based at the Wern Hall, near Northop, Flintshire under armed guard. In the County Herald (a local weekly newspaper) dated Dec 4th 1918 we read ‘Because of the flu epidemic causing a shortage of labour and food, POWs will be allowed to work on farms. One of the prisoners, Friedrich Falk worked at Trosymynydd Farm, owned by Mr and Mrs John Carter (my grandparents) from 21st Oct 1918 - 21st Oct 1919. He was from Wurtternburg, and when he left he gave my mother a German Prisoners Bible, which I now have in my possession.
