Early in the war, an internment camp for German prisoners of war was set up at Queensferry, North Wales; but it closed down on May 21st 1915. In 1918 many German prisoners of war (Prussian Guards) were based at the Wern Hall, near Northop, Flintshire under armed guard. In the County Herald (a local weekly newspaper) dated Dec 4th 1918 we read ‘Because of the flu epidemic causing a shortage of labour and food, POWs will be allowed to work on farms. Please contact Edward Booker, Parkgate Farm, Northop’. One of the prisoners, Friedrich Falk worked at Trosymynydd Farm, owned by Mr and Mrs John Carter (my grandparents) from 21st Oct 1918 - 21st Oct 1919. He was from Wurtternburg, and when he left he gave my mother a German Prisoners Bible, which I now have in my possession. Het verhaal gaat over binnenschippers in Antwerpen. De grootouders van de getuige waren binnenschippers. Toen de oorlog uitbrak zijn ze naar Nederland gevlucht en hebben ze veel vluchtelingen meegenomen. De familie heeft er nooit veel over verteld, maar er zijn indirecte aanwijzingen. Binnenschippers hielden zich op in onder andere Papendrecht, Dordrecht en Rotterdam. De Grootouders zijn in Rotterdam getrouwd, daar had de grootvader een adres. De grootmoeder had een adres in Overijssel. Dat was in 1919. In het kerkje waar ze getrouwd zijn, zijn in die tijd vooral Belgische binnenschippers getrouwd. De binnenschepen werden in Nederland gebruikt om vluchtelingen op te vangen. Er werden bijvoorbeeld scholen in opgericht. De Grootouders zijn na de oorlog in Nederland gebleven, omdat veel mensen het einde van de oorlog niet geloofden.
